LCS 10 is the ninth littoral combat ship to enter the fleet and the fifth of the Independence variant. It is the first warship named for former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.
The selection of Gabrielle Giffords honors the former congresswoman from Tucson, Arizona who is known for supporting the military and veterans, advocating for renewable energy and championing border security. Giffords resigned from Congress to recover from wounds she sustained in an assassination attempt in 2011.
Former Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, selected the LCS 10 namesake and said it is appropriate that the ship is named for Gabrielle Giffords, whose name is “synonymous with courage when she inspired the nation with remarkable resiliency and showed the possibilities of the human spirit.”
